Anna is an artist and designer, who has created a very successful eponymous business from selling her work on a variety of products, from prints to wash bags.
Inspired by her upbringing in rural Dumfriesshire, Anna is known for her uplifting, ebullient illustrations of animals. Behind the scenes, she is intent on building a truly modern version of a creative business, where all involved can thrive.
Why do you do what you do?
I love the challenge of creating something that pleases me and others, and to be able to express myself creatively. Being your own boss means you can take control, to a certain degree, of where you would like to take yourself.
What do you think helps make you good at what you do?
I believe my sensitivity makes me good at the artwork, and in business it makes me acutely aware of what it going on. This can be good and bad.
If I was to give advice to someone setting up a business based on their passion, I would look into what targets you want to achieve and how this would financially work and then decide if you be happy with all that is involved.
And for all people setting up a business involving people management, find out what you are good at and what you are not. Don't try and do everything: delegate and empower your employees.
What advice has most influenced you recently?
It depends on your business, but to take it steady if possible! Quite often businesses crash from growing too fast - they aim too high before they are ready for it.
On a personal note I am reading a book called 'The Highly Sensitive Person', which has given me understanding of many of my behaviours, and being more aware of this has been so beneficial in the way I approach the business too.
How could The Hot Breakfast community help or support you?
The Hot Breakfast community is a brilliant forum to be able to share challenges with other business leaders and come up with solutions.
Being a business owner can be lonely and I would almost say it is crucial to be able to talk through problems with those who have an understanding. It is also inspiring to hear how others tackle challenges and their ideas for moving forward.
What's your breakfast of choice?
Difficult question! I would say avocado and poached egg on some delicious toast: I always go savoury over sweet.
